Soros International House is coordinating Nordplus Adult project “Still Active”



The project partners are institutions from Sweden, Finland, Latvia and Estonia.


The project STILL ACTIVE aims


- to provide people from vulnerable groups , in particular elderly people from rural or disadvantaged areas, who had no opportunity to gain some basic language skills or hasn‘t been practicing for a long time , with a tool - English language, which will encourage and stimulate them to be a part of a busy and changing world , thus breaking personal, cultural and social barriers.

Project STILL ACTIVE presented during the international conference "Languages, Culture, Globalisation" hold in Vilnius 4-5 June 2012.
"Seniors for Seniors – Let’s Fight Social Exclusion Together"

The final event of the Nordplus Adult Programme project “Still Active” (for more information please visit the project at, coordinated by Soros International House - International conference "Seniors for Seniors – Let’s Fight Social Exclusion Together” was held on May 18th in Vilnius, Lithuania.

It was run in two days. There were two agendas worked out for the first day: one for project partners for presenting the results that had been achieved by their institutions after the meeting in Kuldiga and for discussing what remains to be done till the project is over, while the other one - for senior learners who, after meeting with the hosting families, went on a sightseeing tour in Trakai and Vilnius. Though it was raining, everybody had a good time.

The second day was a big event - an international conference in Vilnius. In addition to the project partners from Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Finland, and Lithuania, the conference was attended by senior learners from all partner countries, by people who represented different institutions, which in one way or the other are related to the project idea and could use the project final product in their activities. There were representatives from the Education Exchange Support Foundation, the Lithuanian Association of Adult Education, the ThirdAgeUniversity, Red Cross Society Seniors club in Vilnius, International Labour Contact Net, the representatives from Association Seniors Initiative Centre in Kaunas.

The conference was opened with the welcoming words from Daiva Malinauskiene, Soros International House director and the project coordinator, and the representative from the Education Exchange Support Foundation coordinating Nordplus/Adult program activities in Lithuania.

Then the plenary started. The friendly atmosphere of the conference was created by the greeting songs performed by the project participants – Vilnius Arthritis Club ensemble „Rugiagele“ (Cornflower). They were joined by senior learners from Kuldiga, Latvia. Project coordinators presented visual retrospective of all the project activities, key speakers presented topics on the importance of involvement of seniors in different activities, opportunities for learning in later life, promotion of voluntary service, discussed ways how to stay healthy and fit in later life. All the conference participants participated in the demonstration of physical exercises for elderly people.

After lunch project partners and senior learners participated in a workshop „Sharing experience in textile dyeing using organic materials“ led by the senior textile artist Jurate Urbiene in her studio in Vilnius.

The overall conference evaluation was very positive.


The third Nordplus Adult project STILL ACTIVE partners meeting in Kuldiga, Latvia

The 3rd project partners meeting took place in Kuldiga, Latvia. It was attended by the project partners from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden and by the delegations of seniors from all partner countries that came to Kuldiga for their 1st face to face meeting. They had spent weeks interacting with each other virtually on the project website and now they had a chance to meet „live“.

On the first day of the meeting the participating delegations were welcomed by the Mayor of the Kuldiga District Mrs. Inga Berzina. The project coordinator Daiva Malinauskiene presented the progress in the implementation of the project and introduced the meeting‘s agenda to the participants.

In the afternoon the members of the amateur art groups of the Kuldiga „Rumbiņa“ club put on a spectacular show for the meeting guests.

On the second day of the meeting the project partners met at Kuldiga district Adult education center to continue discussing the project issues, while seniors were having great time on a walking tour through the picturesque old town of Kuldiga.

In the afternoon all the meeting participants and guests met at "Rumbiņa“ club where the folk art, cultural and culinary heritage exhibition representing all partner countries took place. The exhibition was organized by seniors and one could see a lot of nice things made by seniors themselves representing local handicraft such as knitted, crocheted items and others on a display.

The meeting ended with a spectacular concert of folk songs and dances involving all the seniors, who spun in a dance like twenty year olds.

The event interested the Latvian media and there were reports on the meeting broadcasted on the Latvian television.

The first English lesson at SIH, Lithuania

Senior learners from Seniors club from Vilnius Zverynas district attended their first English language lesson.

Project coordinator and SIH director Daiva Malinauskiene welcomed the learners and shortly presented all the modules and forthcoming senior learners meeting in Kuldiga, Latvia.

Under the guidance of the English language teacher Violeta seniors learned quite a few useful phrases on the topic PERSONAL PROFILE.

They were very enthusiastic and active and now are looking forward to their next lesson. They got some homework to do as well.The next lesson will be run in a week’s time.

The second Nordplus Adult project STILL ACTIVE partners meeting in Iitti, Finland

The second partners meeting took place in Iitti, Finland on 10-11 March 2011.

Meeting guests were Iitti Municipality Manager, social partners-representatives from Kouvala and Iitti Adult Education Centers , and Training Inspectors from Salpaus Adult Education and Working Life Services in Lahti, language teachers.

During the first day project partners were presented the program for seniors and then they all discussed the ways and time schedule of its implementation. Partners shared their ideas and suggestions on the draft version of the questionnaire forms both for learners and teachers. An active discussion took place during the presentation on evaluation and self evaluation issues done by Mrs. Marja Orpana-Niitlahti, the training inspector from Salpaus Further Education.

During the second day partners made presentations on the progress in cooperation with the social partners, discussed dissemination issues and the layout of the English version leaflet, which will later be translated into partner languages and adapted to local needs. Then partners reflected on the work done.

It was a very productive two days meeting.

In the afternoon all the partners were invited to meeting hosts Hilkka and Pekka‘ s cottage to meet the representatives of seniors, who will be involved in the training. Some of the seniors presented their handicraf works they had made during their workshops at Adult education centre.

Adult Learners’ Week, 15th - 21st November, 2010

On the 15th - 21st November, 2010 there was an annual (11th) Adult Learners’ Week coordinated by the Lithuanian Association of Adult Education.
Like every year, Soros International House participated in the Adult Learners’ Week and organized various events: a competition “My beloved teacher”, open lessons “Visit each other, learn from each other” for public and students, teachers of SIH, a seminar for language teachers “Educational video films in a lesson”.

During the Adult Learners’ Week we arranged an exhibition of children and teenagers artwork who participated in the EUROCHILD talent competition and Lifelong Learning and Nordplus programme projects’ exhibition “Learning myself and teaching others”.

On the 26th of November teachers of SIH Lauryna Butrimienė and Robin Alexander Muck arranged a seminar “The Unity of Teaching and Learning Methods and Tools when Organizing a Successful English Lesson” for the emplyees of Pakruojis Adults and Youth education centre and teachers from Pakruojis region. International project coordinator Nijolė Šmitaitė presented projects being implemented by SIH under Lifelong Learning and Nordplus programmes.


The initial partners meeting in Uppsala, Sweden, Novemberof 2010

The initial partners meeting of the project "Still Active " took place in Uppsala , Sweden on 24-26th of November 2010. The partners from Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Estonia andSwedenattended the meeting. The director Daiva Malinauskiene and project coordinator Violeta Mirinaviciute represented SIH at the meeting.

The meeting lasted two days. Project Co-ordinator SIH Director Daiva Malinauskiene presented the project activities and work to be done. The meeting was also attended by the president of Uppsala Third Age university Ph.D. Myhrman Ulla, the university teachers and students. They were very active in the debate on project activities, sharing their ideas and experience.

Then project partners discussed on the project website and its content.

During the second day of the meeting the participants discussed the work plan, financial issues, partners commitments and obligations. At the end of the meeting partners summarized the results of the meetingand evaluated the work as a very positive experience.

In the afternoon project partners went on a tour in the old town of Uppsala.

The next project meeting will be held in Finland.
